IRS Decreases Business Mileage Rate to 55 Cents for 2009

The IRS has announced that the standard business mileage rate for transportation expenses paid or incurred beginning January 1, 2009, will be 55 cents per mile, down from the 58.5 cents per mile rate in effect during the second half of 2008 [IR-2008-131, released 11-24-08].

Office in the Home

The deductions will be allowed for a home office only if the office is exclusively used on a regular basis as a place of business by the taxpayer, & in the case of an employee, only if the exclusive use is for the convenience of the employer.

IRS Has Revised Form 982

Homeowners whose mortgage debt was partly or entirely forgiven during 2007 may be able to exclude the cancelled debt by completing the newly-revised Form 982 and attaching it to their 2007 federal income tax return.

The IRS is now updating its systems and expects to begin accepting electronically-filed returns that include Form 982 by March 3. The paper Form 982 is being accepted now. The February 2008 revision of Form 982 is available on the IRS website.
